Harem pants were all over the spring 2009 runways from New York to London and Paris to Milan. Last season they were billowy and clown-like but this year’s take on the trend is a narrower, sleeker version and look surprisingly sophisticated and sexy, especially in black.
When it comes to trouser trends this spring the majority of harem styles are baggy on top but tapered at the bottom, almost a jodhpur effect. Some also have pleated fronts, tie waists or pockets.
Harem Pants on the Spring 2009 Runways
Harem pants can be found in bold colors and prints from Chloé, Betsy Johnston and Alexander McQueen. Other designers who make their mark when it comes to harem-pieces are Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Elie Tahari, Jeremy Laing, and Yves Saint Laurent. Some of the most wearable looks come from the runways of Diane Von Furstenberg this spring, check out her sleek satin pants and embellished tops.
How to Wear Harem Pants
Last year’s fashion trend of billowy drop-crotch trousers (something akin to Thai Fisherman’s Pants) did not do any favors to those, who are vertically challenged. However, this spring and summer sees more assessible, leaner versions, less full around the legs but still wide enough to hide a multitude of figures flaws.
According to Vogue.com's "Fashion Trends for Spring Summer 2009," for the most flattering shape, keep it tight on top; a camisole top or tailored jacket is perfect.” Because of the volume, its important to balance out the top half with a fitted top. If you prefer one that’s soft and slouchy then tuck it into the waist, and add a waist-cinching belt. Throw over a fitted blazer and you have this spring’s “Easy Chic” look.
How to Accessorize Harem Pants
Shoes are an issue. Get them wrong and the look is frumpy and not fashion-ready. High-heeled, strappy statement sandals work best, or this season's sexy cut-out shoe boots. If you are lucky enough to be tall, then you can get away with pretty (metallic?) bejeweled or studded flats, which look great on long legs!
Because of the volume keep the look simple and unfussy. Define a waist by wearing tops tucked in. Add some super-sized accessories to ring the changes – elaborate elasticated-back belts and cuffs are a must!
If you want to embracing this dare-to-wear trend but are finding it difficult to put together an outfit then consider the one-piece wonder of the season. The all-in-one jumpsuit with harem-style trousers is easy- to-wear and surprisingly flattering.
